After a great season start in Pörtschach I was hopping to keep up the performance so no fouling about. Jonas and Miriam were my support team and did a great job - Morals support, Chearing and Screaming ;). So the first wave started, the Pros. Then the main age group got ready for the start so off into the water and look for a good position to start, of course at the front. As the starting shot was fired I gave everything to get out of the main field to the front. Everything went as planned apart from some kicks and hits in the face, the usual. Round the Loretto into the Lend and now the long part started. Just a long channel which seems to have no end and I got slower and slower. At least I could here Jonas through the water screaming his lungs out, which kept me awake. A sharp turn at the end and out of the water, a fast run into the transition made up at least 3 positions. Onto my beloved Sione K11.5, and make it a great ride. Not my best discipline but I needed to keep the position. First uphill which wore me out after the swim. No time for self pity, so on I went. After the first round I had an average of 36.5km/h but suddenly I got tired so I chucked down a energy bar and got back on the hill. About 8 people overtook me, which is less than usual so it seems I was doing ok. The second round was still bad and I got cramps at the end and this would kill my only hope, the run. Through the transition, picking up my goggles which I seemed to have lost earlier and into my running shoes. Everything started to cramp up, but I had to run. I fought and could only do small steps. Jonas and Miri fired me up, which gave me a load of energy every time I passed them. The last km was the longest, but not because my legs were filled with led but they had a bit of error in there measurement and signs - it was about 1.5km long.

But after 2:22:02 h I got to the finish line, got a great 60th place (12th age group).

Other Sione Riders were:

Alex Nussbaumer (2:11:46h) ranked 30th (4th age group) and improved greatly to last year. Gratulation!

Melanie Križ had her first Triathlon debut and did a great 3:19:35h. Gratulation!

The Bike was about 44km and the run about 10.5km so not quite a perfect olympic distance.

My fírst Competition 2011

Season 2011 has officially started for me with a quick 5km run, organised by the local fire brigade (http://www.berufsfeuerwehr.at/). Jonas, my fellow Sione Rider, signed me up, of course without my knowledge and approval. I found that out on the evening on the day before after a hard bike ride, at least Jonas also had a hard training week as well. Well, you gotta do what you gotta do. Up in the morning, a full breakfast and coffee. I was so full, I was about to lose my breakfast literally on the bike ride to Jonas. A quick warm up, let the time pass and off we go and as usual to fast: Started off with a 3:30min/km pace and felt like stepping it up a notch. It just felt great but then out of nowhere, I was empty. The legs were great, no trouble there, but my chest started hurting and breathing was a pain. So that meant 3km through pain... go for it. Keep with the group and do not break away, was all what I thought. Through the turn at 2.5km and back again, just keep it together. My pace broke down to 4:15min/km. I had to get back on track and so I just bit down and tried to gain some and pick up the pace again, firm my position and brought it home. 8th place (18:17min) and Jonas with a great 14th position (19:11min). The third Sione Rider was Alexander Nussbaumer who is just out of our league with 36:06min on 10km and a 3rd position in his age group - congratulation.

All in all, great start of the season and right in between our normal training.

Well it is not over. We got our beloved bikes and around the Wörthersee which was closed for cars today. Miriam (Sione Rider number 4) joined us and she is a great cyclist, she can keep up, no problem. Back home, quick transition and into the running shoes again.

A great day sports fans!

My First Bike Ride 2011

I have been staring outside at the sun from inside the office for the last couple of days, even weeks. Three mad guys from Klagenfurt joined to come along, Wolki my trainer and two friends, Alex and Chris. The three men cheer group grew to 6, since my sister and my parents were coming to Berlin as well. The weather did not play along since it was already raining a day before the start, but at least the temperature was perfect for me. Sunday 9 a.m. a shot was fired and the run started. The first km was hard to get through, but then I managed to keep a nice pace. I knew it was going to be hard but I could keep the pace just right. But then out of nowhere my thighs had enough, they just did not want to go any further. Already after 22km the energy was gone. Damn, how could this happen. This should be my day, what should I do? I just did not want to lose to much time and keep under 3h, that was still possible. But one runner after another overtook me. This was bad and it just kept on getting worse. The pain just grew and nothing helped. I soon realised that all these annoying phrases:"pain is temporary, glory is for ever", "pain is weakness leaving the body" are just hollow words - just nonsense. They do not help they just make you realise that you are in pain. It was either to give up or keep going, not more and not less. Maybe next time I would have a fresh start, next time I would be fitter. Or should there even be a next time? This is just a big fight and withstanding the pain. Slowly the kilometres passed, one after another. At about 34km it got a little better and at 37km I got my coke. Sugar helps. Passing this point, it would not be far to the end so on I went. I could hardly move my legs but I kept running. Just before the 42km mark the watch said 3h. What a frustration but no stopping now and just get it to the end. In Berlin running "Unter den Linden" through the Brandeburger Tor is just great and lets you forget for a second that everything burns. Then comes the finish line and I made it. As soon as I started walking the pain tripled. About 3:04h a good improvement to my last marathon but I have a to learn.
Big thanks to: Thomas Wolkensdorfer (Trainer)
My Parents who made it to at least 7 Positions each along the route - Just great, it really helped me to keep going.
Thorsten Rasch (Gruru and Sponsor)
Chris and Alex (Fans)
My Sister (Fan)
Again Thanks to all of you

Damn, the rush does not stop I think I need another Marathon :)

My First Sponsor - Mein Erster Sponsor

Thorsten Rasch (Sione Bikes) always supported me. The service is just great, even though I am a complete amateur he give the best support one could get. It just is more than a bike service. Fast repairs, we train together and who gets his bike picked up from home - just great. So technically he already was my Sponsor. But now he got me a running shirt from x-bionics, I already had it on and it is great. Nice and comfy. It kept me nice and warm although it was quite fresh outside. Since my trainer also emphasise the importance if compression clothing I just can recommend it.
Now I just need to get the Logo onto the shirt. Big THANKS!!!

My First Heat Stroke - Mein Erster Hitzeschlag

Time for another Kärnten Läuft. Last year was quite a good weather and I did a nice time, but not a very consistent run. I was looking forward to this run, since it is my preparation for the upcoming marathon and I would have a direct comparison of my progress. But it should not be. It was one hell of a hot day and the run started half an hour later than last year - nobody liked it.
So 10min before, one dextrose water supply and a carbohydrate bar and of we went. My trainer gave me instruction to run a 4min pace which I started with. But pretty soon I fought against the heat and I slowed down a little. At about 7th km I was quite frustrated since I just could not keep the pace it was just one big fight. And it got worse and worse, the pace got up to 4:25min. This nearly brought me to giving up - later on I found out that the km markings were wrong. At km 15 I got back and started to push a little and it worked.

21.097km in 1:27:21h, not quite the time I wanted but considering the circumstance it was a great run. And no I did not stroke.

My First Long Distance Swim

The Schwimm Aktiv Club training season has ended and as a nice finish we did a long distance swim. Of course we were divide into 3 groups, me taking part in the longest swim which should be 3.6km. From Krumpendorf along the bank the to the other lake side along that shore and then across the lake back to Krumpendorf. Seeing this only as a social event, although speaking during swimming does not work, I took it easy. Hannes M. as usual did not use a Neoprene, the madman. So on it went and a long time it took. My good, it is really hard but not really physically but mentally, you can not shut of your brain and you can not really drift away into ones fantasy world since you always have to stay on course. It took long and I was really tired and I got hungry. It is just tedious, but at least I know now that I will keep away from long distance triahtlon. It took us 1:30h and as I measure the distance again, it was a little longer..... nearly 5km. What a swim!!!

My First Satisfaction

First off, before the Rosentaler Triathlon I was on third place of the Kärnten-Cup in my age group Elite I. Next year I will be in Elite II which will not be so easy anymore. I know the guy, Markus G., who is on second place and to catch up I need 5 points.
Weather was perfect, slightly cold and some drops of rain. A small 350m swim, which is just to short for me but I tried to get some speed. Since the starting line was quite broad I had a lot of space and no struggle with the crowed. On the other hand I had no one in front of me for drafting. So I got out of the water and I saw in front of me the Markus. Bad news and due to my bad bike riding I will lose him. Nevertheless, I tried to keep up with the other, since drafting was allowed. I had to struggle so hard, and just wave after wave of men overtook me. I just could not keep up and lost one group after the other and therefore had to ride on my own. So I tried to give my best.

Off the bike, super fast transition and onto the run. I had to catch up the guys which overtook me and if really lucky get Markus. I caught up some places very fast, one after another, a brutal but great run. After about 4km I gave up on getting Markus but still wanted my 4min/km. So I ran and ran... but what do I see there, that guy seems familiar, it was Markus 100m in front of me and still 500m to go. I caught up fast and already warned him that I was coming and he should better pick up the pace. But not a chance, I just slammed passed and put a sprint at the finished to make it a sure thing.

Not quite sure what place I am now at the Kärnten-Cup but I should at least keep my position. 3 weeks and the last event will take place at Faakersee with an Olympic distance - my kind of race distance.

I was so dame happy, because for the first time I pulled it through and nice fast race in all three disciplines.

So all in all 0:06:43/0:41:58/ca.24min (350m/32km/6.1km)

(The timekeeping did not work in the second transition)

And a big thanks to Thorsten who checked my bike at a very tight schedule. I rode to often in rain and some dirt got into the bearings. He cleaned my beloved K11.5 Sione-Bike and as usaul did a great job! THX Thorsten.

Alles in allem 0:06:43/0:41:58/ca.24min (350m/32km/6.1km)

I already signed up for Gösselsdorf last year but due to bad weather and no good transportation I had to cancel. This year I could start no matter what. A friend of mine lent me his car and was completely independent. As usual I got there to early, just as I drove into the parking zone I noticed that I forgot my bike shoes - great! So I got my racing documents at the racing office and drove back to Klagenfurt. I could not complain, it was a long time since I drove a car and it was great fun despite the slight shifted position of the steering wheel, or maybe because of that. Back home I got my shoes and off again to Gösseldorf. There was enough time, not because I was there to early but the race starts extremely late at about 5 p.m.. Something special about this triathlon that there are two transition zones and the start- and finish line are at different positions. This may sound nice but has the downside that you need to get your goggles and swim cap after the race. But even worse you have to get to the start somehow, which maybe done by the shuttle bus. But then you still got the problem with your shoes or walk bare foot before the race start... it is just a logistical nightmare. Nevertheless, I got everything set got my a second pair of running shoes and did a little bit of warming up - the first time ever. But still there was massive time and so I sat together with some guys and chilled.
Finally, we prepared for the start, it was already quite full so I knew this would be another fist fight. We started in the water which does not make it easier. The swim was quite short so we were all tightly bunched together and it was hard to get past the others. Then came the water lilies which seemed to scared some of the guys since some started to drop back and I could pass them. I got out of the water and as usual my lung started to burn. I must be doing something wrong during this transition, suddenly all my energy is gone and I do not seem to be able to grasp any air. I got the bike and squeezed my goggles and swim cap into the back of my trousers. Then I ran down the tremendously long transition with guys constantly overtaking me, I just wanted to get on the bike then all will be fine. On I went and tried to go for it. The bike ride was quite good, I did not drop so many places behind and uphill I was super fit. I nearly had a mean velocity of 35km/h but then came the windy part just before the next transition and I nearly stood still, I just could not fight the wind. At the last 500m there was a ban on passing and just before that a guy passed me, I knew he would block me during the last 500m so got some energy together and overtook him. I never saw him again, he would have really blocked me. Into the next transition and the run started. I wanted to keep some energy since they told me that there is a steep hill. A bad decision since the hill part was just about 500m and was not so steep. I got a bad average of about 5 min/km which is just shameful. At the finish a guy sprinted with me to the finish line he pushed me back in a quite unfair behaviour which one can see in the picture. The wuss did the relay so technically he was not even in the same race.

At least a great picture to be laughed at was the results.

So all in all: 0:09:09/0:56:37/0:33:17 (480m/32km/6.7km)

My First Rainy Triathlon - Mein Erster Regentriathlon

The day before the triathlon in Velden it started to rain, normally not so dramatic since it would surely stop after about three hours. Quite exited I woke up the next day and wanted to pack my things - meanwhile for me routine. The first glance out of my window showed it was still raining and it did not seem like it would stop in the next six hours and it was a heavy rain. I was too exited to cancel another rainy triathlon and I needed to learn to start in bad weather. Well my colleague Jonas called me and wanted to here from me, that I will not be starting and will chicken out. Well not this time and he had no other choice than to come along.
With a big bang from a gas cannon the triathlon started and it was brutal in the water, kicks and punches. One punch right into my goggles - outch. After about 500m out of the water a 100m run and back in again, that was painful since my lungs started burning. Out of the water again onto the bike and a 3 lap course. The first lap was super slow since I really was not used to riding in the rain, but it got better lap by lap. But still I was to slow and at the last lap Jonas overtoke my. That was really hard to swallow for me. He screamed at me and I increased the pace and I noticed there is still some loads of energy left. Into the transition, I saw Jonas a couple of meters in front of me and just screamed on top of my lungs that I will get him. I screamed so loud the audience got scared. It took some time but I caught up and wanted to pull him, but he was really fighting with stitches and I had to let him go and just go for it. I had to do a lot of catching up to do from all those guys who passed me on the bike course. And most important I wanted to have a under 4min/km run. And I did - YEAH!!!

Great fun Triathlon but not a special time with 1:14:22 (750m, 20km, 5km - 0:11:25, 0:41:12, 0:19:39 - swim, bike run).

My First Triathlon 2010 - Mein Erster Triathlon 2010

Season 2010 has started and I did my first sprint Triathlon. The swim was awesome, I really tried to keep up and give my best. My lungs were burning and I was struggling as you can see on the picture. I got out and the air just hurts. Onto the bike and really tried to not loose too much. I could not keep up with the first pack and an average of 39 km/h. The next pack was also too fast (38km/h) but then came some guys who I could keep up with. But they were not really the best in keeping the pace constant and drag racing was a real pane with them. Downhill they suddenly had a speed of 25km/h and I could not get pass to lead because they were blocking the way. It was a real pain but on the other hand I was happy find a group with my kind of speed/slow. But at the end I had enough and really pushed the pace. A small very hill came and I lead the group with 40km/h and some, over the hill and onto the next hill into the transition. A great transition and into the run. I could keep a 4.10min/km pace but still not happy with it, I know I can go faster.

Well all in all a great start and as it seems my best part in triathlon are the transitions, I overtook 6 guys in the first one and 5 in the second ;) (750m/20km/5.4km - 0:12:25/ 0:31:12/ 0:22:01)

My First Bike Ride In 2010

So finally the weather was getting better an I could get my dream bike out for a ride. The training said 90min but I wanted to go out with the guys and Thorsten already had a nice tour planned. I was fit and in a good mood, after 30min very slow warm up as we were picking up Thorsten in Pörtschach we started the tour. It was the first time I was in a group of four, normally riding on my own or Jonas. A new experience, because you need to be more focused keeping up if you are in the slipstream or keep the pace if you are upfront. Furthermore, there is not much space to manoeuvre. 90 min was the plan, but I knew with these guys it will be longer. But after 2 hours and 30 minutes we were suddenly at the Gerlitzen, a Mountain I usually go skiing or touring and 30min by motorway from home. My energy reserves were depleted and I was kinda bushed. Turning around was no option, I just had half an energy bar I gorged down and my drink was nearly empty. We stopped for 3min to get the rhythm out of our system and then on it went. Now hunger struck really hard and so I kept myself at the back and was just trying to keep up. Jonas who also was having trouble suddenly got a push of energy and lead the group from now on - no idea how he did that. A small photo session in Reifnitz (the fourth bike rider already left us in Villach) and then the last km back home. A quick shower, protein shake and meet with the guys again at a birthday party to fill our stomach. The host already knew what was needed and there was plenty and delicious food (meat fondue and raclette).

... a great tour and a great day.

Fourth Ski Tour

Thorsten found it a good idea to take me to Goldeck, a black piste which we need to ascend. My first thought was "great idea". It went quite steep up from the start and already after a couple of hundred meters I was sweating from head to toe. At the steepest part I slid done and I really had to fight the urge to just call it a day. And this was only 30min in.
Thorsten needed to wait every part of the way but he is great sportsman an took me up. It seemed that the trail had no end but after 3h I finally reached the summit. It was hard and we instantly went into the nearest hut for refreshment. The way down we tried our best but we really were worn out, but we made it.

Big thanks to Thorsten for taking me up and waiting for me, he could have done it in half the time.

My First Ski Tour

After I went up with ski shoes I needed to get me some touring skiies. The same week I went shopping and bought them. I could not wait to get on top of these lovely mountains surrounding me. But I still had to wait 2 weeks since I was away on business. But yesterday was finally the day. Thorsten and I made a great tour on the Verditz. I was awesome.
The whole day was kind of wicked. I got up ate breakfast, slept half an hour jogged 12km to Pörtschach were we drove to Verditz for the 2h30min tour. Getting back from the tour another half an hour sleep and went to the one hour swim training - some easy technique training. Was a great way to finish the day but then I was bushed.

My First Skishoes

Actually, I wanted it to call it: My first Ski Tour, but since I did use Skishoes it would not be quite correct. Well I am not a pro but I try to read a lot about training and compiling the right training plan. After we sat down he was not just good informed but a pro. The Alps are just beautiful in summer, in winter actually at all seasons. I took a 1 week vacation to go skiing and relax like here on the picture were I am on one of the huts eating Kassnocken and drinking Weissbier.
The skiing was also a great training for the upcoming season. Last year we had the best powder snow ever. It was up to my hip and even deeper which was one of the greatest skiing experiences. This year I did some mogul pistes and it was bloody exhausting - just what I wanted. After seeing more than one good skier going down those mogul pistes I had to learn to ski them down. Well it was no great success, it felt like being thrown around in a washing machine and I thought it must have looked like it as well. My brother promised me that it did look quite cool, but I know there is still a lot to learn. My brother the madman still skiing on his old 2.07m skies, also went down the mogul pistes - big respect! When it comes to nice, rapid ski-swerve he is definitely an ace. On the new skies he would be unstoppable. Here he is taking a snap shot of the landscape.

New Sione Page online

Finally, the new page from sportart is up. No idea how he made me go along. Well I said yes so I had to go.
My plan was to swim about an hour, make 3km and then make a pause for 15min. Funny thing was that I actually was quite fit but swimming in a 50m pool gets to your head. It was quite dull and after 4 hours I had to get out. The pause was quite long but I just could not swim any more it was too boring. Physically everything was fine I was not exhausted, the monotonicity just got to me. Nothing happens in the water and try that one hour long. The only thing one had to do is to overtake the guys in a lane, the only change. If it was not for that I would have gone completely mad. Back in the water after another hour my right shoulder started to hurt like hell and I had to stop. That was it, I already had to stop after 12km. I thought the event was over for me. So I went to bed and slept for 9h. I got out and my friend already did 25km so I really wanted to get back in and try how my shoulders would do. It still hurt but changing my stroke style helped perfectly. Another 14km in about 6h. This day went much better and I started to enjoy it.
Sadly it ended but with my bad shoulder I was happy about getting out of the water.
I just was sad since I only made 26 km (522 laps, each 50m) with a pure swimming time of about 8h30min. Maybe next time? Not yet sure.

update: A picture of me and my friend Hannes after about 20h of the event... still having fun and yes he had no neo and still did 10km more than me.

Kosiak Löwe - chickened out

So I am way behind with writing, but not much to report. I just chickened out of the Kosiak Löwe. I already signed up for the race, which was a 13km bike ride uphill (mountain bike) and then about 3-5km uphill run. The run did not bother me but I am not much of a mountain biker. So the week before I tried it with a friend of mine and the first 8km were normal road and were no trouble. Then it got little bit off road but still no trouble. But the last 3km were horrible, they put rubble on the road and I had real trouble to keep a straight line and the handlebar under control. I got up with just falling off the bike twice, since I had clicks and did not get out of them fast enough. I think that is nothing for me.

Downhill the rubble part was even worse and my natural chickeness of biking did not help so I fell onto the rubble and grazed my leg. But the normal road downhill was great fun, the cars could not even keep up - it was super.
At the bottom I noticed that my leg was hurt worse than I thought and small stones were underneath my skin like splinter so I washed that out. Well for the kosiak it was not fun enough so I cancelled that race.

Save your Freedom

Normally I write about sports but it seems I will not get passed also writing something about politics. Due to some bad planning of my Marathon I skipped some triathlon, which I regret. Well, now was the time to see what I learned on the bike.
The weather forecast was contradictory, some said it would rain other said it was going to be a sunny day. Never trusting the guys/girls doing the weather forecast I trusted my instinct and prepared for bad weather. I bought arm warmers, since I thought it was going to be cold after I got out of the water. The arm warmers helped Daniela ryf a lot in Hamburg so I thought I give it a try. All my stuff, shoes, helmet, glasses.. where put underneath a plastic bag just in case.
Into the water, I started way back and had to fight my way to the front which was hard work and caught up with the lead group. I did not believe it and it went well. All went good to 750m of swimming. Then I looked up and it rained, which is no problem in the water except for the sight. I looked up again to see the next buoy but it was too far away and the rain drops on the lake blurred the vision. As long as the guy in front of me knew where we were going everything was ok. Well nothing was ok, my goggles started to fill up with water and I could not see jack. Damn, if I empty them now I will lose the group. I flipped on my back and emptied them, as soon as I turned back again the goggles filled up again and I had real trouble concentrating, finding the right direction and keeping up. I just wanted to get out of here. For the next 600m I had to empty my goggles 5 times and I lost a lot of time. Furthermore, since my eyesight is not the best I nearly mised the swim finish line, if it had not been for the crowd who yelled to get me into the right direction. So out of the water, off with my goggles and the cap. I lost the goggles on the way, but who cares. The rain had stopped and due to the plastic bags helmet, glasses and sleeves were dry - onto the bike. It was quite lonely, two people passed me, but that was it. But since it was a 4 round race, the second round got crowed and even more with the next rounds. The slippery roads and 700 bike riders on a 10km stretch needed a lot of concentration, but all went well. Off the bike and into my running shoes. I started slowly but got up to a pace of 4:05, which was not too good.
Result was a great triathlon, it was super fun, even if the swimming part was a struggle. I had an overall time of 2:17:36 h (26:56 / 1:05:25 / 0:41:23 - 1.5km / 38.4km / 9.6km). As usual, I have to get better, especially my bike time needs some polishing. And here I am on my way home, happy about a great triathlon.

Kärtnen Läuft - Carinthia Runs

This was my first half marathon an since I was so disappointed with my marathon I needed a proper time. Worse than 1:30h was not an option, but not too easy. The day before it rained so it was nice and cold, the perfect weather for me, so no excuse there. I was in a good mood an confident, warmed up a little and then went to the start. With about 3200 starters it was cramped. In between all these runners the usual question arose: "why am I doing this again" and as usual there was no answer, that just came later. Well lets get going, which was not easy since it was so full. I needed about 2km to get out of the masses of runners. And then I saw the official 1:30h runner he stayed about 200m ahead of me and I could not get him. I was hungry and still not warm enough, damn. With about a 4:20min pace I was just too slow. But then came the first food station and I got a banana. I squeezed it into my mouth and like a hamster kept it in my cheeks pouches. Slowly I could then eat it which was not quite easy due to the heavy breathing. So the hunger was cured, after 5km I was finally warm and so I could finally start running. I picked up the pace and got to the 1:30h runner. Everything was going well so I stayed at about 4:07min but then I noticed there is still some energy left and only 3km to go. So I went for it. I had troubles with my watch, but it had to be a pace under 4min and it was going great. Why did I not start earlier with this speed. Well with a nice sprint I got to the finish line at 1:28:04h which is ok, but I knew I could do better.

My New Bike

Finally, I got a proper picture of my new bike. The bike is just great and makes bike riding much more fun. My old bike started to flutter at about 45km/h which was quite dangerous. With a bad surface even earlier. There was something wrong with the weight distribution. Once I had a big backpack on my back, at about 14kg which made the bike much easier to ride.
Well that is all history and I can enjoy my Sione bike.

Marathon Fürth, nearly DNF

The Fürth-Marathon was already a couple of weeks ago but I just could not write this article. It took some time until I could write this down. I just did not achieved my goal and failed by far....
Well lets start with the beginning. I was confident, I was in good shape, everything was going well and Jonas, a friend of mine even accompanied me on the bike, which was great.
So what happened. After already 1km my stomach told me that he is not joining the run. Well since I was running on my feet I said, well this is not going to be fun but I will manage. At about 10km my thighs stop working, they just cramped up and they were stiff. After 10km!!! this was not good this meant pain, no way I can get a good time. Just running with my lower legs I at least made it to 20-25km but then the legs just stopped all together and pain was all I could feel. Something was wrong, very bad. This was not how I planned it. Jonas who accompanied me on the bike helped me by supporting my willpower which was real close to giving up. My brain even stopped working. I tried to figure out the speed I was running but I just could not remember the time when I last passed the last km-mark - my brain was totally fried.
There was no chance in getting a good time, this was just to know my limits. The body stopped, can I still manage this. Well it went on and as last time, at about 35km the guy with the hammer came, and he hit hard. But now there was no way I would give up, I just kept running.
At the last meters a guy wanted to sprint against me and finish before me. This was not tolerable, I had to give everything and I did. I could not bend my knees anymore so I kept the legs stiff and sprinted over the finish line as if I had casts on the legs.... later I found out that the guy was no marathon runner, he did the relay.

Well I finished 31st with 3:10:05h, little more than 1min less than my last marathon. I was devastated. I had real troubles physically and mentally for quite some time. Only after 1 week I could walk properly again and after 3weeks my head started to get over the big loss.

Big thanks to my fans Ines, Pilz, Kathi and Gunnar from Erlangen. My parents who drove the long way from Prague.
And especially Jonas who came along from Klagenfurt, big thanks I owe you!

Well this just means... this was not the last marathon.

My first Aquathlon

So the next competition I can call "my first". 750m swim and 3.3km run. It was one week before my marathon, but a short distance should not hurt. Wetsuit was allowed but it seemed I was one of a few to put one on. Most of the others started without one, which was weired since it was a cold day and the water was not much warmer. Well nothing special happened, since I had quite some trouble with stitches. In the end I could at least put in a nice sprint.

I came in third in my class, which was not astonishing since only 4 in my class started. Most of the others were not older than 22 and all much better than me - this was not too good for my ego.

A Gap In The Space-Time Continuum

Opening googleearth or googlemaps will reveal at position 46°37'41.5'' North longitude and 14°05'37'' East latitude a gap in the space-time continuum. But were should I run to? It was going to be a very hot day so I thought it was a good idea to make short stops at my flat to refill on water and maybe get a bite to eat. This would have meant to run back and forth to the Wörthersee which would have been a little boring. Kathrin, a friend of mine, offered to join me by bike and carry beverage and my energy bars. Well this made it much more interesting and I could satisfy an ambitious of mine to finally make it to the other side of the Wörthersee, to Velden. It was great and I felt great, back and forth with a nice 4:53min pace.
The view along the shore was beautiful - Lake and Mountains what does one want more? The top of the mountain was still covered in snow making it even more impressive. And afterwards I just relaxed at the beach and cooled down in the icy water.

Big thanks to Kathrin for the support!

Special Guest in Erlangen

Due to my work I am back in Erlangen for two weeks. Since I am still a member of TV48 Erlangen I went to my old swim training. I was standing at the pool and who was there, Faris Al-Sultan. I could not believe it, I was training with him. Just take part and take it as a training. Full throttle would not be possible since I did a 18km run the night before. My Colleague Jonas did see this differently and I assured him that we stay together the whole time. I would pull him on the run and he will help me on the bike. Oh yeah, it was the first time for me to ride in someones slip stream, which was aloud in this race.
Well, we started running and it was hard. Jonas put in quite a pace but I kept up and still had some energy left, but not much. Well I got onto the bike and drove off not waiting for Jonas because I knew he would catch up and he takes his time with 1+min in the transition zone - I think he had to adjust his bra. Well as I said he caught up at about 3km with a pack of others. He shouted at me to get along and I did. My muscles ached and so we lost the pack but soon cling on to a new group of 2 which was very fast. We had an average speed of 37km/h which was tremendous for me. It was great fun. But to be honest I had not enough energy to lead for a while. Jonas was fit and did a great job upfront.
As we came off the bike I knew that was the maximum, my muscle just did not respond anymore. Jonas described my running style as: "running like a wounded duck" (ger.: "wie eine angeschossene Ente"). After about 1.5km it got better and we got back some speed and finished.

It was great running with a training colleague. The only thing that bothered me is, that I suck on the bike and Jonas did all the work. But still is was one great event!
My time: 27:01 / 59:25 / 15:13 with 7km / 37km / 3.5km (run/bike/run). Officially the bike track should have been 30km.

3 Weeks nothing

Right after the 8h week training I got sick - which I thought as impossible. It is a great feeling to finally get the training more or less right again. Due to loose chippings I am still not going out for a bike ride, so 8h is a nice time for me. Well, still nothing to those who do up to 15h or those insane guys with up to 30h.
It is a good start for the marathon I signed on. I am running in Fürth again and going for it!
I still have trouble organising the training right since my swim training is on Tuesday and Thursday. Monday would be much better. Furthermore, on Sunday I do not have enough time to do my long runs. To be honest I get out of bed to late and the afternoon is already packed with dancing lessons and a cup of coffee ;).
Well time management is also a quality you learn if you start making your training plans. It was this view on a beautiful autumn day.
Going uphill was quite hard but being such a chicken I found it harder to get down again ;). It was at the shore of my new swimming pool, the Wörthersee.
After waiting quite a long time, I was much to early there, we all got into the water. A shot was fired and I started crawling like mad. This time we were quite close together and arms were flinging everywhere. A kick here and a slap there, I had to get out of this madness so I swam and overtook one after the other. I got together with some guys swimming the same speed and I went for it. It was hard, I was tired and had no energy at all and quite early I had to fight the urge to slow down. Well after about 1km I already saw the fishing house were the transition zone was. I aimed for it... but what is this, why was there a granny and grandpa knitting on the porch. Oh, s$#! wrong fishing house. I had to turn a little and aim for the right house.
I got out, my stomach hurt, the same story as in Erlangen. I took a energy gel which took away the hunger and so I got on the bike. 2 Rounds with quite a hard hill to start with. Well as useual I was bloody slow, hands on the brakes and well.... just shameful.
But then I changed to running and had to give the best. My legs were hurting but I had to give everything. I took it to easy in Erlangen and I knew there is enough energy left.
A great triathlon, it was great fun.

76th place in 02:08:41h (00:22:36 / 01:08:02 / 00:35:19). It should have been 1.5km/40km/1okm but it was all much shorter, I would guess 1.4km/36km/9km.

My New Home - Klagenfurt

In the last week of August I moved to Klagenfurt with one difficulty, I had 3 days to move in my new flat and get ready for the Wörthersee Triathlon 2008. Yes, I got hooked and had to sign up. From morning to night I worked to get my new home ready. It was a hell of a job and no time for swimming, running or bike riding. I really missed it. The day before the triathlon I got out to get my documents for the race and took at the bike course.

Since I needed a new club I also spoke to the HSV guys if I could join them. It was my first one and I had no idea about the transition zones, well actually I had no idea at all. When I got all documents for the competition, chip, numbers etc. I sat done with my colleagues from the club and they gave me the answers I needed. Of course they made fun of me, being a mere newbie but they helped me a lot and giving them something to laugh about just made it easier and made me take it a little less serious.

The day arrived, I had to get up quite early and get all my gear together. I checked in the transition zone and waited for the start of the race. I felt like it took ages. Then we all got into the water and bang, my first triathlon started. It was wild, arms flinging everywhere. I just had to get out here, so I swam. And quite soon we were a small group following the first and best group and everything got calmer. When I got out of the water I had a cramp but luckily there was a guy helping the swimmers out which help me to relieve the leg and it took away the cramp. In the first picture I am just getting out of the water. I was astonished when I saw how big the gap to the rest of the swimmers was. But in all fairness the last swimming group was already some of the swimmers doing the half distance Triathlon (swimming 2km) and what one does not see is the swimmers in front, the first group, which were long gone.
Well I got into to the transition zone. In the picture I am getting my cap off as I trained hard the last days :). Got off the suit and got on the bike. Well this is not quite my best discipline as you can see in the next picture. Hands on the brake and not in the aerodynamic position, it seems like I never got over 20km/h. I got overtaken by quite a lot of people, which was quite frustrating and scary. Because what I heard was a kind of wushing sound, which kept getting nearer and nearer. I never heard it and did not know were it came from. Then I saw the wheels of the guy overtaking me. They were carbon fiber discs, which cost about the same as my whole bike.
I was so relaxed from the bike ride I tried to overtake those who passed me on the bike and so I did. My first triathlon and me on the finish line.

All in all I got in 33rd place in 02:23:18h (00:25:29 / 01:12:46 / 00:45:03). It should have been 1.5km/40km/1okm but it was all longer due to some technical difficulties, since the half distance also had to be included into the same route.

Klagenfurt

Actually, I already new that I was going to move to Klagenfurt. This was an opportunity I was longing for and I took the chance.
In July I got myself a nice flat and was ready leave Erlangen in August.

Post Marathon

The next day I was in a great mood. No muscle aches, no injuries, nothing. Nevertheless, despite my optimism I took it easy the next week and had to fight the urge signing up for the next opportunity to line up at the next starting line. Well there was only one thing that was itching me, the triathlon in Erlangen. After a week or so, I just had to sign up.

My first Marathon

6 o'clock in the morning, I got up and ate my usual breakfast plus an energy bar and drank a lot of water. Then I walked to the train station, got on the train and after a 15 minute ride I was in Fürth. Now one tip is to run a little before the start. Since I was so nervous I thought my body is already fully pumped up and every 10min I had to go for pi.. so I left out the warming up. Well we got on the starting line and I checked my pules: 230... OK, I was nervous but I was not dead... yet. Then I realised I was not the only one having a pulse watch on which interfered with mine and so I took my pulse the old fashion way.
I got in line were it said 3:30h, since I had my injury and I still was wearing a bandage - I was kind of scared that in the middle of the Marathon my injury will be back.
Bang, it started and I was feeling great. Having hundreds of people around you just pushes you. Still wanting to get the best performance out of me, I aimed for a 4:45min run, but there was no marking to be found which would give the distance. So I guessed and thought I was in the 4:45min range and still feeling great - I really wanted to go faster but having in mind that this is just the easy part I took it easy.
The big crowd got very small after passing one runner after the other. Quite late after 45min I saw the first marking: 10km. What? I had a pace of 4:30min and it was still going great, so I kept it up, but I still had to pull myself together not to got any faster.
After 24km I took up some speed, since everything was going great. Now at 30km the chap with the hammer was knocking at the door, but as you can see in the picture taken at that point all was going well. Well It soon got worse, I was not in a crowd of runners anymore and the audience got sparse - well they can not cover 42,195 km. At 35km it got hard, my muscle were aching, my legs just would not move so easily anymore. Now this is the part I knew from my test runs but I was now running much faster than at those runs, about 1min faster and I had to keep it up. I lost little my pace but kept moving and after running in the country side we got back into the city were the crowds were. This gave me another reason to keep it up. There was no other runner in sight just the crowd and me - I kept going. It went on for ages. One bend after the other, like going in circles no straight line. The distance marking were no were to be found. The finish line had to be here somewhere. Then I heard the crowd and went for it. There was the goal and I made it... what a great day. This is why I did all the training and it was the right thing to do, what a feeling, what a run... what pain, what hunger. Yeah, the pain did not leave and I needed something to eat. I went to by bag and gorge down an energy bar and drank water. Nothing could get that smile of my face, so bloody happy.

Well to keep it short: I took the train back and went home from the train station. This 20min walk was great, the pain in my muscle suddenly disappeared.

Oh yeah, I got in as 47th in a 3:12:02 (netto: 3:11:32) time.

THANKS

Before starting off with the Marathon a big "thank you" is in order. My flat mate G.Z. who pushed me to sign up for the Marathon and made some great pictures during my finish.

Not to forget Ina and Christian (aka: Pilz) who made it my birthday present to support me during the run. I think after getting up at 8 a.m. on a Sunday they soon regretted their idea. But they were true to their word and did a great job. Thanks to those two I was 10min faster, minimum. A good crowd gives you great energy. Here are the two wackos, being rather optimistic with my Marathon time.

2nd Quarter 2008:

So there was only 10 Weeks left to gain speed and much more important to even get to the finish line. I heard from some long Marathon runners, sometime after 30km the body kind of breaks down. Others refer to it as: The man with the hammer comes by to say hello. This is actually a very good image, because it really expresses the pain you are in.
April started and with that my first sport injury. During a fast run I pulled a muscle. Now this happened exactly in the middle of a 17km run, so to get back I still needed to make approximately 8km. Funny thing was that I still could run and it was easier than walking. So I got back home and went straight to the doctor. He looked at it and said: "YEAH, strained muscle, you will be back on you feet tomorrow". Which I did not believe, since I limped and had trouble getting up stairs. A big lump was in my thigh. I went to my usual general practitioner and asked for his opinion, due to good experience I had with him. He gave me a number of a masseur, telling me that a physical therapist is not such a good idea since they only give you exercises and are to lazy for anything else. This was a great advice. I had a great masseur, twice a week and every time the lump got smaller and the pain actually was gone after the first two sessions.
I took the advice from Galloway to give your injuries a lot of time to heal and I knew this would take at least 3 weeks. So my training was on ice, but somehow I knew everything will work out fine. So to at least stay fit I intensified my swimming, which was no problem at all. I even joined the TV 1848 Erlangen which has a great swimming team. Of course I started as a floating tree trunk. They had a "water adaption" training once a week. I never heard of that, since I only did my laps. A friend of mine recommended to take part and I was astonished on how great my swimming improved due to this course. It gives you a great feal for water. Also they did some nice exercises for your crawling technique. But what was really hard was the backward crawl, backward butterfly swimming and all kinds of underwater swimming over a length of about 15m, this really gives you stamina.
So I start swimming 3 time with the club and at weekends alone in the public swimming pool. It was not enough for me and I started to notice that bicycle riding, which I did to get to work, also was no problem for my injury. So I gave it a try with my mountain bike and it was fun. I went to the shops and bought myself a racing bike, got out onto the country roads of Erlangen.
My Triathlon enthusiasm started.
Now and then I tried, very easy, if I could run but after 3 weeks there was no hope, even though my limping stopped. During running the whole pain came back and I knew if I would not stop I could start from the scratch. After 4 weeks I gave it another try, slowly and with a bandage and it worked.
I WAS BACK.
I build up my muscles with slow runs over 2 weeks and got back to my original shape quite rapidly and even better. I continued the training. Now since the Fürther Marathon can get quite hot, I exercised a lot during the midday sun which was complete murder. I even did some long distance (38km) runs during this time, which was actually the cause of getting up so late on Sunday and no training intention. These runs were a horror, I got to meet the man with the hammer and he really killed me. I did had some water supplies with me but it was not enough. At 30km I just felt pain and wanted to get home, which was still 8km away. Nothing helped, I just had to get through it. Getting home after such a run ended always the same, showering, eating 300g of pasta, drinking a lot of water and staying on the couch watching some DVDs.
The last week, as recommended, I just took it easy.

Well than came the Marathon... (to be continued)

1st Quarter 2008:

I got my feet back and started running with the beginning of the year. I just ran how I could, no plan and no constraints except for my shape, I just enjoyed it and it was great fun. Quite quickly my shape increased and it got better by the day. It is amazing how fast your body adapts and builds up stamina.
My room mate pressured me a little to take part in a race, just for fun. Since I always talked about marathons he showed me a leaflet from the "Fürth Metropolmarathon" and convinced me to signed up, which I did. This is were it all started, finally a goal to achieve and the only option was to do my best. Just crossing the finish line would not satisfy me.
A great book already was in my possession: Marathon - Das Erfolgsprogramm: Das Erfogsprogramm from Jeff Galloway. It is a great book and it helped me a lot. Especially the cross training and the day off. The day off is actually the hardest, telling yourself to take it easy while your whole body just wants to get out breath in the fresh air, absorb every little sun ray and run until... well, I never did that so I have no idea what would have happened.
The cross training was the first step to triathlon. 2 days in the week a non running sport should be done, like skiing, skating, cross-country skiing, swimming, bike-riding etc.. Bike riding was a possibility but the legs could not fully recover from previous running exercises. I already tried skating for 2 years and did not stick to it and regarding skiing, well snow was not always around. So there was swimming. Erlangen has a great public swimming pool and is cheap. Twice a week I did my laps in the water, easy, breast stroke and was now and then overlapped by some very old geezer. I had to change to crawl and sucked in every little advice from the Internet of how to improve your technique.
My stamina was there but speed was missing. A couple of short distance runs, 12 times 1.6km helped me there and I gained speed rapidly.
At the end of march I was a long distance runner, 30km was no issue in a good pace but still not enough for a good marathon time. And running Marathon still needed another 12.195km and I knew that was the hard part. Despite my achievements I was far away from finishing, forget about a good time.

Finally I can fill up my blog. Since most of it will be about triathlon I need to recapitulate the last year and how I got to this lovely sport

Pre year 2008:
I had a problem with my foot during running which was the only sport I did and that very seldom. It fell asleep after longer runs especially if it was a faster training. Well, living with it over 3 years, searching the Internet and visiting couple of doctor of different specialties I gave up, even though stretching was the best remedy but not the cure. Another year past and I just wanted to get rid of it so I gave the doctors another try, a sport doctor - not the first one. She was quite aggressive about me tying the shoes to tight but subscribed something anyhow. I did not want to take any meds so I gave her theory a try and tied my shoes so loose that they nearly came off by themselves. I am not exaggerating. A very quick run, of about 12km showed me, that everything is ok. I lost about 10kg in a very short time and started my regular training from then on.

Welcome

Welcome to my first blog.
